Gestalt Therapy 101: Healing in the Present Moment
By Alexis Cabrera, LMHC, LPCC
“Lose your mind and come to your senses.” That line captures Gestalt therapy better than any textbook. Instead of endlessly analyzing the past, Gestalt brings your attention to what’s alive right now — and that’s where the change happens.
The here and now
Gestalt therapy is an experiential approach centered on present-moment awareness. Rather than only talking about what happened, we notice what’s happening as we talk — your posture, your breath, the feeling that arrives when you say a certain sentence. Awareness itself becomes the tool for change.
Why the present is so powerful
So much distress comes from replaying the past or rehearsing the future. When you can fully contact your present experience — sensations, emotions, needs — you stop being run by old patterns on autopilot and start making conscious choices. That’s freedom.
Gestalt also pays close attention to non-verbal communication and the relationship in the room, which makes it a deeply human, engaged style of therapy.
Who it fits
Gestalt tends to resonate with people who feel stuck in their heads, who over-intellectualize, or who want therapy that’s active and honest rather than distant and clinical. It pairs naturally with work on relationships, identity, and trauma.
I offer Gestalt-informed therapy by telehealth to clients in New York and California.
