How to Find an Affirming LGBTQ+ Therapist in New York
By Rez Pazooki
Finding a therapist is hard enough; finding one who truly gets your identity and experience can feel impossible. If you’re searching for an affirming LGBTQ+ therapist in New York, here’s how to find someone who treats who you are as a strength — not a symptom.
What “affirming” actually means
An affirming therapist actively understands and honors your identity as healthy and whole. They have real lived and clinical experience with LGBTQIA+ clients, use your correct name and pronouns without making it a project, and never frame your identity as the problem to be fixed.
There’s a meaningful difference between “LGBTQ-friendly” (welcoming but not necessarily experienced) and genuinely affirming (competent, informed, and identity-centered). For deep work — coming out, transition, minority stress, identity-based trauma — that difference matters.
Questions worth asking in a consultation
Most therapists offer a free consultation. Use it. Good questions include:
- What’s your experience working with LGBTQIA+ and trans clients?
- Do you provide gender-affirming care or letters if I need them?
- How do you think about minority stress and identity-based trauma?
- Are you part of the community, an ally, or both — and how does that show up in your work?
Why telehealth widens your options
You’re not limited to therapists within driving distance. Telehealth lets you work with an affirming, queer-competent clinician anywhere in New York State — which matters a lot if you’re outside a major city, or simply want the privacy and ease of meeting from home.
At Lionheart, we’re a queer-led practice providing affirming telehealth therapy across New York. Affirmation isn’t an add-on for us — it’s the foundation.
